The incredible Live At The Social DJ mixes are the stuff of legends. In a smoky room in early 1997, ‘The Social’ hosted Beats Atlas to follow in the legendary footsteps of The Chemical Brothers and Monkey Mafia’s Jon Carter. This set didn’t get the formal release of the other two (nor Andy Weatherall’s that didn’t get released until 1999) but it has all the classic tracks from the time.
This is the sound of big beat’s all too short-lived hey-day with a little acid techno, dub, and a sprinkling of indie magic thrown in. At this point in the evolution of UK dance music, The Chemical Brothers were still sounding like a particularly psychedelic and hard driven rock band. The Propellerheads were a rock band, live drums and instrumentation, but it all sounded like they were about to blow the whole joint up.
The night went a little like this:
- Jailbird (Chemical Brothers Remix) – Primal Scream
- Leave Home – Chemical Brothers
- Shaolin Buddha Finger – Depth Charge
- Voodoo People (Dust Brothers Remix) – The Prodigy
- Voodoo Beats – The Prodigy
- Tow Truck (Chemical Brothers Mix) – Sabres Of Paradise
- Nine Acre Court (Chemical Brothers Remix) – The Charlatans
- No One’s Driving (Chemical Brothers Remix) – Dave Clarke
- Packet Of Peace (Chemical Brothers Remix) – Lionrock
- Prime Audio Soup – Meat Beat Manifesto
- There’s Gonna Be A Riot – Dub Pistols
- Comingtogetcha – Propellerheads
- Blow The Whole Joint Up – Monkey Mafia
- (The Best Part of) Breaking Up – The Chemical Brothers
